Playlist Building

So, does anyone have any methods they use to build playlists?

I personally keep 4 playlists on my spotify account. One for faster/harder songs, one for the slower/softer songs, one for trying out new songs or albums, and one for all of the weird stuff that is too odd to go in other playlists. I usually put entire albums on my playlist and run them all in shuffle mode.

Bands I love and always have on the playlists, usually their entire catalog:

The Posies
Army Navy
The New Pornographers
Ted Leo & The Pharmacists (except for 1-2 albums)
Palmdale (only two albums, but so good...)
Goner (NC band, not the West coast grindcore band)
The Rentals (Except 1 cd)
Johnnie Rook
Cults
Margot & The Nuclear So & So's (Except 1 cd)
Four Year Strong
The Vanity Project
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
The Eames Era
Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time

Albums I love similarly:

Murmurs - Blender
Uh Huh Her - Common Reaction
Aquabats! - Charge!
Interpol - Turn on the bright lights
The Pierces - Thirteen Tales of Love and Revenge
Screamfeeder - Kitten Licks
Human Highway - Moody Motorcycle

Other artists I really like, and usually keep 1-2 albums from them in my playlists:
Weezer (Really uneven, but good stuff abounds)
Smashing Pumpkins (Siamese Dream through Machina 2)
The Minus 5
Interpol (The rest of their stuff)
Moonbabies
The Clientele
The Kinks
The Kooks
Thee American Revolution
Beulah
The Connells
bis (Mostly the later stuff)
Dressy Bessy
Apples in Stereo (Up to Velocity of Sound, mostly)
The Minders
Cloud Cult (Really uneven, but lots of good stuff mixed in with the mediocre)
Rilo Kiley
Arcade Fire
The Decemberists
Bowling for Soup
Bambix
Diablo Swing Orchestra (Except Singalong Songs for the Damned & Delirious)
Screamfeeder (So prolific...)
The Pursuit of Happiness
Too Much Joy
Letters to Cleo
Veruca Salt (except 1 cd)
Jimmy Eat World
Bad Astronaut
The Muffs
Harvey Danger
The High Water Marks
Islands
She & Him
AC Newman
Neko Case
The Lisa Marr Experiment
April Smith & The Great Picture Show

Albums I really like:
The Ocean Blue - Cerulean
Little Man Tate - About What You Know
The Pixies - Indie Cindy
The Fauves - Footage Missing
The Limousines - Get Sharp
Wild Light - Adult Nights

Such a weird mix of music, I wish someone could tell me why I like the stuff I do, but it's kind of a mystery even to me. I guess the largest group in them is probably "Power Pop" though.

Also, one song that is awesome, but not in my playlists because Spotify doesn't have it... Tengaku! If I could stick one song on Spotify that isn't on there, it'd be this one.

I don't judge people who like an eclectic variety of music. I judge people who only listen to one genre. I can go from Uncle Tupelo to GZA to Andrew McMahon to Pearl Jam in an afternoon with no problems whatsoever. I don't really listen to playlists, so I've got no advice there. I'm a stodgy sonofabitch with albums. I only listen to music in full album format top to bottom.

Hah, well that's a much better way of listening to music than the people who take 1 really popular song off each album and end up with a very shallow playlist of ~60-100 songs. I actually enjoy doing that now and then myself, but I also like just throwing 1200 songs on shuffle to see what pops up next.

I generally just leave things up to my iPod. Sometimes I'll do a Genius Playlist, and there are times when they hit the mark, but it typically likes to call up lame ass songs from everyone involved, haha. Like if I've got a groovy and funky playlist going, I don't want Michael Jackson popping in with goddamn "Earth Song" when it could be something from Off the Wall. So I have to spruce things up.

Putting my iPod on album shuffle, then skipping to my favorites is pretty common (though I'll settle into whatever album shuffle comes up with), but beyond that I only really create playlists of general stuff (upbeat, dance, etc.) that are 500-600 songs if that small so that I just put it on random. Going with Drake right now; just on song shuffle. It gave me a surprisingly perfect transition between "We'll Be Fine" and "Up All Night." As for Drake, I don't have trouble shifting genres like nate, but I'll still struggle with general moods sometimes. If I've got Drake going and then it turns into Nick Drake, prolly gonna skip out of Nick if I like what's happening before he comes up.

I would like to build "punishingly intricate" playlists, but I've got too much stuff that my early efforts at exclusion just becomes general stuff and I've got 100 songs before I get halfway through my collection lol.
